〜てはいけない
Must not...
About
The ~てはいけない pattern is used to say that something "must not be done". To use ~てはいけない, simply attach はいけない to any て form verb.
Dictionary form → | て form → | ~てはいけない |
|---|---|---|
食べる | 食べて | 食べてはいけない (must not eat) |
はいけない is a combination of the は particle and いけない, the negative potential form of 行く.
~てはいけない can be made more polite by conjugating ない to ません.
E.g. 食べてはいけません
~てはいけない can be made more casual by turning ては into ちゃ (or じゃ if the て-form verb ends with で).
E.g. 食べちゃいけない
E.g. 飲んじゃいけない

Attach はいけない to the end of a て form verb to say that the verb "must not" be done
