The ~なら・はともかく and ~なら・はまだしも patterns are used to express that "While X may be okay/permissible, Y is not okay/acceptable". This entry concerns the ~ともかく patterns!
For ともかく, the following patterns are possible: ~ならともかく(として)・~はともかく(として).
E.g. 子供のいたずらならともかく、大人がそんなことをするのは許せない。 "If it was a kid playing a prank that's one thing, but it's unforgiveable for an adult to do such a thing."
E.g. あいつならともかく、俺は人のピザを食べるなんてことはしない。 "I don't know about him, but I'd never eat other people's pizza."
E.g. 新人ならともかく、10年働いていて、お皿もまともに洗えないとは...。 "If they were new, that would be acceptable/understandable/etc., but to not be able to wash dishes properly after working (here) 10 years..."
The ~なら・はともかく and ~なら・はまだしも patterns are most commonly used in casual/polite spoken contexts.
